About Miller-Harrison Insurance Services

early policy

Miller-Harrison Insurance Services started as Maeglin Insurance in 1919. Founded by Otto Maeglin, the slogan was “Let Otto Insure your Auto,” which proved to be a catchy phrase when he issued the very first auto insurance policy in Muscatine.

In 1924, Otto brought in a partner and changed their name to Maeglin & Diercks Agency, where their slogan became “Anything Insured Against Everything.”

After 35 years (1959) as Maeglin & Diercks Agency, Otto hired his son, O. Richard Maeglin, and converted it back into a family business.

In 1970, Robert Miller left Travelers Insurance Company and made the move to Muscatine from Kansas City, Missouri, joining Richard Maeglin as a partner in the agency.

Shortly after that, in 1975, Michael Harrison joined the agency leaving USF&G Insurance Company in Des Moines, Iowa.

With the addition of Bob Miller and Mike Harrison, the group purchased Moore Insurance Agency in 1980 and moved the office to its current location at 100 West 2nd Street.

In 1983, Bob Miller and Mike Harrison purchased the agency from Richard Maeglin who then retired from the insurance business.

Miller and Harrison’s continued growth led to yet another purchase of Beckey Life & Casualty and the addition of John Beckey. The company was then renamed to Miller, Harrsion and Beckey Insurance in 1986.

Bob Miller’s son, Jeff Miller, joined the agency in 1989 from Allied Insurance Company in Des Moines, Iowa.

16 years later in 2005, John Beckey departed to start his own Life and Financial Services Agency and the name is changed back to Miller & Harrison Insurance.

Two years later, Bob Miller retired and Jeff Miller and Mike Harrison become partners in the agency.

In 2011 Brad Hodapp joined the agency as a producer, after working at Pearson (NCS) located in Iowa City, Iowa for 7 years.

“Our history shows our commitment to serving the area and our pride in being part of it.”-Mike Harrison, President of Miller-Harrison Insurance Services
