Is Your Home Protected?
With the start of 2012 just a few weeks away, many of you will take a moment to reflect back on the events of the previous year.
You will most likely remember the fall of certain regimes and dictators, the Royal wedding, and even the death of Steve Jobs. Undoubtedly, you will recall the crazy weather we’ve had in 2011. We had earthquakes in Oklahoma and Washington D.C., a hurricane in the northeast, a flooded Missouri river, straight-line winds and hail like we’ve never seen before.
Many people were not prepared for the extreme weather of 2012; the unusual location and the severity of these events caught everyone off guard. Although these events may seem uncommon to us; the fact is they are becoming more and more common each year. It’s time to plan for and analyze the financial impact of potential weather-related disasters by reviewing and updating your insurance policy, so you can be better prepared if disaster strikes. Many homeowner policies exclude earthquake and flood, and most cover wind, but to what limit?
An article written by Amy Hoak for the Wall Street Journal talks about homeowners insurance and how many people are not properly insured. Read the article here.
The start of a new year is always a good time to review your policy and even reevaluate your property’s replacement cost. The cost of building materials has increased significantly, and the house you bought 10 years ago may cost much more to rebuild today then what you have listed for on your insurance policy.
So, begin 2012 with peace of mind knowing that you are properly covered; for just a few extra dollars a month it could save you a lot in the end.
